Jail for hospital upset

A man who admitted being disorderly in Altnagelvin Hospital has been jailed for three months.

Declan Noel Grimes, of Pelham Road, pleaded guilty to an incident on August 10, last year.

No details about the incident were read out. However the court was told Grimes had been arrested and taken to hospital for treatment at the time.

Defence solicitor Leonie Keegan said her client was ‘unclear’ about why he had been arrested and that was the cause of his behaviour.

She added that the 23-year-old accepts his behaviour was ‘totally unacceptable’ and there was other people present at the time who would have been upset by his behaviour.

Ms Keegan said Grimes wished to apologise for it and said he ‘deeply regrets’ the incident.

Jailing the 23-year-old, District Judge Barney McElholm said this sort of behaviour in the hospital ‘is not going to be tolerated’.

He said Grimes has a ‘disgraceful record’ and various attempts have been made to turn him around in the past.
