A man who assaulted his girlfriend and a good Samaritan who tried to intervene has been jailed for four months.
Michael Joseph Gerard Stokes, of Cedar Street, pleaded guilty to two assaults and disorderly behaviour.
The charges relate to an incident on the Strand Road on November 9.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that the assaults were reported to police by city centre CCTV operators.
The footage of the incident was played to the court.
The 34-year-old could be seen assaulting a woman, hitting her on the face and grabbing her by the hair.
As she attempted to walk away Stokes kicked her and hit her again.
The footage then showed Stokes following the woman and an unknown male intervened.
He was then assaulted by Stokes.
The 34-year-old was arrested and during police interview denied the assaults.
However, when he was shown the CCTV footage he said he was sorry.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client was ‘physically sick’ after seeing the footage of the assaults.
Jailing Stokes, District Judge Barney Mc Elholm said ‘this was a disgraceful incident. Unfortunately it is all too common in this man’s history’.
