A man who assaulted his pregnant girlfriend has been jailed for a total of seven months.
Martin McShane, of Kular Court, William Street, pleaded guilty to two assaults on the woman and criminal damage.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that police were called to the car park of Kular Court in the early hours of April 4.
The injured party had approached a security guard and asked him to phone her a taxi because she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. She was bleeding from the mouth and had marks on her arms.
The couple had an argument earlier on that night and she left the flat. It was revealed she scraped the 37-year-old’s car with a key and he then grabbed her by the hair.
During the assault McShane punched the woman, who was four months pregnant at the time, about the face.
CCTV of the assault was played to the court.
McShane can been seen grabbing the woman by the hair, hitting her and lifting items out of her handbag and throwing them or kicking them.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client is ‘thoroughly ashamed of himself and rightly so’.
He said that around £1,000 of damage was caused to McShane’s car by the injured party but ‘that doesn’t give him the right to do what he did’.
Jailing the 37-year-old, District Judge also imposed a suspended jail term which had been imposed the day before he assaulted the woman.
