Judge’s plea for help for drink addicts

A street drinker who damaged the door of a hostel has been jailed for four months.

Damien Joseph Young, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to causing damage to Foyle Haven on July 10. The 49-year-old received a suspended jail term earlier this week for theft.

Jailing Young, District Judge Barney McElholm said; “If I could do something else with people like him I would but there is a complete lack of any facility”.

He said it was like a “revolving door” with the 49-year-old and until society finds “something humane” to do with people who have addictions “this will continue at great cost and little point”.
