Two men who kicked a ‘vulnerable’ man about the head like he was ‘football’ have each been sentenced to six years in jail.
Jason John Robert Curry (35), with an address at Winchester Park in Derry’s Waterside, and David James Greene (27), with an address in Paisley, Scotland, both pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm to their 50-year-old victim on July 14, 2012.
Derry Crown Court heard both defendants attacked the man outside a house at Argyle Street in the city.
An eyewitness said the injured party was both punched and kicked unconscious and described one of the kicks as ‘being so hard’ that his ‘head flew back and his body went limp’.
He was then dragged into the house and it was at this stage he was robbed of his MP3 player and mobile phone.
Sentencing the pair, Judge Philip Babington described the assault as ‘appalling’ and ‘gratuitous’.
On the robbery charge, he sentenced both defendants to six years in prison and imposed four years jail terms on the GBH charge. The sentences are to run concurrently.
Judge Babington said both men would serve three years in custody followed by a period of three years on licence.
