Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said he was armed but no shots were fired. He is now being questioned in the Serious Crimes Suite in Antrim.

Police on both sides of the border have been looking for Kieran McLaughlin in connection with the murder of Barry McCrory in Derry last Thursday.

Chief Inspector Lemon said gardai spotted McLaughlin driving a silver-coloured car in Donegal last night. They followed him and then the PSNI took over when he crossed the border. He later stole another vehicle before being arrested.

CI Lemon, who led the PSNI operation, said he was pleased it ended successfully.

“It was a very tricky and a very long operation, it went on for seven days,” he told BBC Radio Foyle this morning.”We’re just glad we were able to bring this to a successful conclusion, that we were able to arrest him and no shots were fired and no-one was hurt.”

CI Lemon said the operation is continuing and the police are looking for a second gun and another vehicle.
