A 25-year-old Romanian national has appeared in Derry Magistrates Court accused of controlling a woman for prostitution.

Razvan Nocolae Gros , whose address was given on court papers as 306 Kular Court, is further charged with possessing an improperly obtained driving licence and identification card.

The charges relate to items found during a search of Gros’ home on January 16.

An investigating officer told the court the search was part of an ongoing investigation by the organised Crime Branch into prostitution and claimed that during the search officers found paraphernalia associated with prostitution.

He told the court this included eight mobile phones and 12 sim cards.

He said these sim cards had female names on them and police believe these relate to prostitutes operating on both sides of the border.

The officer revealed that a mobile phone was seized that Gros admitted was his and information was found on it which links the phone to six prostitutes advertised online, and bank details of an online advertiser of prostitution.

The court heard that finger prints were taken from the defendant and police shared these with Gardai who have them on file under another name and address in Letterkenny.

During police interview Gros denied the offences.

Defence solicitor Damian McDaid told the court that there would be no bail application.

Gros was remanded in custody to appear again via video link on February 9
