A man accused of arming himself with a hatchet during an incident in the Strathfoyle area of the city has been released on bail.

Mark John Rush, whose address was given on court papers as 39 Dereen Drive, is charged with possession of an offensive weapon on January 13.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard there was no police objection to the 44-year-old being released on bail, subject to conditions. Rush was released on his own bail of £500, to reside at an address in Lettershandoney.

The court heard the defendant is alcohol dependent, however District Judge Barney McElholm banned Rush from consuming alcohol.

He said that while he didn’t “want to set someone up to fail, they may drink too much at home and be out on the street waving a weapon about again.”

Rush was also ordered to attend his doctor to seek advice about his alcohol addiction and mental health issues.

The 44-year-old will appear in court again on March 8.
