A man who assaulted his pregnant girlfriend has been ordered to complete 180 hours community service.
Emmet Starrs, of Earhart Park, pleaded guilty to common assault on January 1.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 21-year-old had a row with his then girlfriend and he forced her to the floor.
Starrs also grabbed the woman by the hair.
The court was told the injured party was four months pregnant at the time of the assault but only sustained a small bruise during the incident.
However, she had to have an emergency scan to check on the baby.
During police interview, Starrs claimed that the injured party had thrown herself to the floor during the row.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client and the woman were arguing about the choice of godfather for their child.
He said it was an ‘unfortunate incident’ and the relationship has now ended.
The solicitor told the court it was ‘heat of the moment stuff’ and thankfully no serious injury was caused.
Imposing the community service order, District Judge Barney McElholm also ordered the 21-year-old to pay £100 to Foyle Women’s Aid.
