A man who assaulted a pregnant woman has received a suspended sentence.
Gerard Majella Nicholl, of Leafair Park, pleaded guilty to assault and disorderly behaviour on October 12, last year.
Derry Magistrates Court heard the 54-year-old pushed the injured party up against a window. He continued to push her even after she told him she was pregnant.
The woman was ‘highly distressed’ as a result of the incident.
Police were called and Nicholl shouted ‘RUC b*******’ at the officers a number of times.
Defence counsel Nicola Coulter told the court her client ‘regrets’ his behaviour and he ‘can’t believe he is responsible for doing such terrible things’.
She said the 54-year-old had problems with alcohol, but has been addressing them since this incident.
Suspending a five month sentence for two years, District Judge Barney McElholm also ordered Nicholl to pay £250 compensation to the injured party.
