A 44-year-old man has appeared in court accused of attempted murder.

John Paul O’Rourke, of Canterbury Park, faces a total of eight offences in relation to an alleged incident in the early hours of July 20.

They include attempted murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of a knife, attempted grievous bodily harm and making a threat to kill.

The incident allegedly occurred in the Summer Meadows Park area of the Waterside.

Derry Magistrates Court heard O’Rourke is a family friend of the alleged injured party and they had been out together, with a large number of the injured man’s family.

At the end of the night another family member arrived to give everyone a lift home.

However, the injured party and another man had to remain behind because there were too many people to fit into the car.

An investigating officer told the court the injured party and the second man were agitated and upset about this.

When they arrived home a short time later there was an argument between the alleged injured party and those who got home before him.

A female had to sit on top of the alleged injured party, to try to defuse the situation.

It is alleged at this stage O’Rourke armed himself with a kitchen knife and kicked the alleged injured party in the head a number of times.

The woman was also assaulted by the 44-year-old as he did this.

It is alleged O’Rourke made threats to kill another man and then allegedly ran towards the injured party, head butting him and stabbing him in the back three times.

An investigating officer told the court eye witnesses initially thought the alleged injured party was being punched to the back. However, when they saw the blood they realised he had been stabbed.

The court heard the injured party sustained three stab wounds to his back, which are two centimetres in depth, and remains in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit

He revealed that one of the knives was recovered from behind a parked car in a nearby drive way.

There was no bail application and the 44-year-old was remanded in custody.

He will appear in court again via videolink on August 14.
