A man who has had an alcohol problem since he was 13-years-old has been jailed for stealing beer.
Brian David Robert Neely, of Church Meadow, was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to stealing £90 worth of beer from Tesco in January 2010.
He also admitted possession of mephedrone and dishonestly using electricity between September 2011 and January 2012.
Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey told Derry Magistrates Court the 27-year-old, who is currently a sentenced prisoner, has had issues with alcohol since he was 13.
He added that Neely was with another man who he believed was going to pay for the alcohol, however they walked out of the store with a trolley full of beer without paying.
Mr Harvey said the 27-year-old has been making “excellent progress” while in prison and has completed alcohol courses.
Referring to the dishonestly using electricity, Mr Harvey told the court his client was not responsible for bypassing the meter but was aware it had been done.
