A man who sexually abused his two sisters has been jailed for 18 months and ordered to spend two years on probation.
The 54-year-old, who cannot be named to protect his victims, pleaded guilty to a total of 22 sex offences between 1973 and 1984.
Derry Crown Court heard the abuse started when the first victim was 14 and the second was seven. He abused one sister on just one occasion, as she was standing naked in front of a mirror. However, he abused the other sister on numerous occasions over a ten year period.
The court was told he took photographs of her naked, touched her and made her touch him. It was revealed the naked photographs were found by other family members at the time and the health authorities were involved, but nothing more came of it.
The court heard that one of the victims has suffered from depression and believes that her brother ‘stole my childhood in many ways’.
Judge Philip Babington said the abuse was a ‘serious breach of trust’. He said it was a ‘dreadful course of conduct’ which may have started out as teenage curiosity but became ‘personal, selfish and for your own sexual gratification with little of no concern’ for the victims.
Jailing the 54-year-old Judge Babington also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for ten years.
