A 39 year-old man with 225 criminal convictions has been remanded in custody charged with assaulting his former partner and stealing her car.

Patrick Morgan of Churchill Road, Ballykelly appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to alleged incidents in Ballykelly and in Coleraine on October 26.

Among the 14 charges against him are causing damage to a bedroom door by headbutting it, driving with excess alcohol, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Opposing an application for bail a police officer said officers responded to a domestic incident at a house in Bonds Court, Ballykelly where they found the alleged victim crying, alleging that she was “viciously assaulted” with kicks to the face and punches all over her body. A friend of the alleged victim said she had witnessed the alleged attack.

The police officer told the court that the accused then allegedly made off in the injured party’s car to an address in Coleraine where he was later arrested.

The court heard that Morgan was on bail in connection with an alleged assault on the same injured party 15 days prior to the incident.

District Judge Barney McElholm said Morgan was a “clearly a danger” to his ex-partner, her friends and other road users.
