Mayor’s husband charged with assault

The Mayor of Derry’s husband has appeared in court accused of assaulting a couple.

Declan Aaron McCallion, the husband of Sinn Fein Councillor Elisha McCallion, appeared at the local magistrates court on Wednesday.

McCallion, of Elaghmore Park, faces two charges of common assault and further charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on Academy Road on May 19.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said the matter was ‘unlikely to trouble the court’ and asked for a short adjournment.

However, a prosecutor told the court the PPS are not in a position to take pleas of guilty in relation to the charges.

He said that ‘there may have been further offences committed at the same time’ involving other complainants.

The prosecutor said McCallion may face further charges as a result of this.

The 34-year-old was released on bail to appear in court again on June 17.
