Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has said there is no place for guns on the streets following an incident in Shantallow overnight.
Police said a number of shots were fired at a car parked in the Drumleck Drive area at around midnight.
Mr Hassan said: “Details of this incident are still emerging but clearly there can be no place for guns on the streets of our city
“We are in a new era, we are creating a new society for the younger generation and the people of Derry just want these attacks to stop.”
There have been no reports of any injuries following the shooting.
PSNI Inspector Colin Hamilton said today: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious to contact detectives at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
