Probation for punching female police officer

A man who punched a female police officer “for no reason” has been given a probation order.

Paul Brown, of Foxhill, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on March 18. The 21-year-old admitted further charges of assaulting and resisting police.

Derry Magistrates Court heard Brown was acting disorderly in Shipquay Street in the early hours of the morning. Police officers spoke to him and he left the area.

A short time later he approached a female police officer standing close to Magazine Gate and punched her “for no reason”.

Brown ran off but was chased by police and when he was arrested claimed he “wouldn’t punch a woman”. District Judge Barney McElholm ordered Brown to spend 12 months on probation.
