A former Derry SDLP councillor who sexually assaulted an 11 year old girl has been ordered to spend three years on probation.

William McCorriston of 23 Philip Street pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the child on two separate occasions between September 6 and September 21 2010.

Passing sentence Judge Piers Grant said the second sexual assault on the child was “ a clear escalation of behaviour and I have no doubt the early stages in a grooming process that would have led to more serious incidents.”

He said it was true the 77 year old had lost his good reputation.

He told the defendant :”It is you who has brought shame upon yourself and your family.”

Judge Grant also ordered McCorriston to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

The former councillor will also be subject to a sexual prevention order which bars him from any unsupervised contact with children aged under 18, including his own grandchildren, and loitering near anywhere where children frequent.
