A man who threatened to kill his father has been ordered to spend 12 months on probation.

Barry Alan Porter, of Elaghmore Park, pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill on June 14.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 29-year-old made a 999 call to police and claimed he was at his home address armed with a knife.

He told the operator he was going to end his father’s life as he was unwell anyway.

Police attended the address and had to initiate a firearm incident procedure’ and also had to request assistance from a specialist police team.

The court heard that Porter’s father was unaware of the threat and police brought him out of the property to safety.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey told the court the 29-year-old continues to live with his father.

He added that the father is ‘very supportive’ of Porter.
