Problem of drugs raised by new Judge

The problem of drugs in Limavady came under the spotlight this week at the local Magistrates Court when the recently appointed District Judge was hearing a drugs case concerning cannabis.

District Judge Liam McNally said in his short time in Limavady, over the past two weeks, there seemed to be a large number of drugs offences. Speaking to a prosecutor, the Judge said he took it there was a particular problem in Limavady with class B drugs. The prosecutor replied: “I wouldn’t disagree.”

Judge McNally made his comments when hearing the case of Stuart Hutchinson from Edenmore Park in the town. He was convicted of possession of a class B drug, herbal cannabis, on July 10 when police seized eight grams of cannabis worth £106 and a further two grams worth £40. Judge McNally deferred sentencing for 12 months and warned Hutchinson (24) if he committed further offences he would face jail.
