The PSNI Area Commander for Foyle has vowed that frontline policing in the Derry district will be unaffected by any further in-year budget cuts.

Dismissing rumours that there might be another cull on police jobs, the newly appointed Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan said: “You have my absolute assurance, we will not see front line officers affected by those cuts.”

Looking forward to serving as the Area Commander for Foyle he said it was a challenge, but he hoped he would be given space to carry out his role, which included building on relationships he had forged over the last two years planning policing for the UK City of Culture.

The 50-year-old father of four’s aims are: “To take the city forward, to give it more of a sense of itself and for the PSNI to play its part.”
