A man who put a police officer in a “headlock” when they tried to search his van has received a suspended jail term.

Paul Gerard Ward, of Coshquin Road, pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting and obstructing police on April 24, last year. He also admitted disorderly behaviour.

Derry Magistrates Court heard officers spoke with Ward, who was in a van with another male. The 49-year-old became abusive and refused police permission to search the van.

He got out of the vehicle, “stated his views on the police” and a “physical confrontation” ensued. Ward grabbed one of the police officers and put him in a headlock. A number of officers then had to pull them apart.

Ward received a three month jail term suspended for 18 months.
