A man accused of raping a 14-year-old girl has been refused bail.

Jonathan Michael Simpson, of Brandywell Road, is charged with raping and falsely imprisoning the girl on July 18.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police opposed bail because the proposed bail address was in Derry and was too close to the home of the alleged injured party.

Simpson had previously been granted bail to a hostel outside the city but he was unable to get a bed.

Refusing the application, District Judge Barney McElholm said ‘again this highlights the lack of any proper provision in term of bail hostels but that is unlikely to change in the near future.’

Simpson was remanded in custody until October 23.
