A man who robbed two bottles of whiskey from a local off licence has been jailed for two years.

Darren Victor Beattie, of Euston Parade, Belfast pleaded guilty to the robbery of the Carraig Bar off licence on October 30, last year.

During the robbery the 29-year-old forced the shop assistant over the counter and grabbed him by the throat.

He also forced the injured party behind the counter and told him to ‘open the f****** till’.

Beattie then took two bottles of whiskey from the shelves and left.

Both bottles were retrieved by staff minutes later.

The incident was captured on CCTV which was shown to Derry Crown Court.

It was revealed Beattie had come to Derry to visit his partner and had gone on a three day drinking binge, consuming eight litre bottles of vodka.

Passing sentence, Judge Phillip Babington jailed Beattie for two years and ordered him to spend a further two years on licence.
