Shock at pensioner death after burglary

East Derry MLAs have expressed their shockand concern at at the death of a pensioner in his 70s in Coleraine during a burglary at his home early Monday in the Mountsandel area.

SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat said: “Details are unclear about quite what happened next, but the man whose home it was died during the burglary. This is the first incident of its kind in this area and it is extremely shocking – this is an area with no previous pattern of criminal activity. This speaks of the most heinous cruelty – people breaking into an elderly couple’s home in the early house and leaving a widow with the final memory of her husband dying as he answered intruders’ screams for money. This event calls for the total cooperation of the public in the area with the police who are trying to get to the bottom of this attack. Anyone with any information, however small, must give it to the police as a matter of urgency so that these cowardly people who attack the vulnerable can be brought to book as soon as possible.”

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said that the burglar who attacked a pensioner in his home causing his death must be caught before he can strike again.

“First of all I would like to express my condolences to the family of the pensioner killed today in protecting his home from a burglar. It is essential that anyone with the smallest piece of information make it available to the PSNI so that he can be caught before he causes more hurt.

“Pensioners need to be able to feel safe within their homes yet again we have seen elderly people being targeted. Communities need to come together to protect their elderly and vulnerable neighbours and root out those who prey upon them.”
