A man who stole £430 of razors and blades has received a suspended sentence.

Mark Anthony Brown, of Hawthorn Drive, pleaded guilty to five charges of theft between March 4 and March 14.

Sentencing had been deferred to allow the 38-year-old to make restitution.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that he stole the razors and blades from Boots.

Brown was arrested and told police he stole them so he could sell them and fund his gambling habit.

Defence counsel Stephen Mooney said the razors were not stolen out of greed’ but to fund this habit.

He told the court the 38-year-old has sought help for his problem, is repaying the money and just over £250 is still outstanding.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a two month sentence for 18 months and imposed a compensation order for £253.42.
