Police have appealed for information after a stolen car was torched and abandoned in the Bogside this morning (Friday).

Just after 6.15am police received a report that a man abandoned a car in the Westland Street area of Derry and set it on fire, completely destroying the vehicle.

Police said the man was wearing a blue and grey hooded top.

The Volkswagen Passat was earlier stolen, sometime between midnight and 6.15am on Friday 13 November, from a house in the Old Mill Court area of Pennyburn.

Reports suggested the destroyed car was causing tailbacks of traffic earlier today.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Anyone with any information about this burglary or who may have seen the car between the Old Mill Court area and Westland Street area is asked to contact Strand Road Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
