Stone-throwing youths are ‘intimidating’ elderly priest

A local councillor has called for intervention following reports that an elderly priest in the city is being intimidated by stone-throwing youths.

SDLP Councillor for Creggan, Jim Clifford, has spoken of his concerns about recurring incidents at Chapel Lane, the pathway which runs behind St Mary’s Chapel up to the Creggan shops.

“I received a call from an elderly priest who was home alone in St Mary’s Parochial House as young people outside threw stones at the house,” Colr Clifford told the ‘Journal’.

“This is understandably frightening for the priest involved, and I am asking those responsible to stop and think about their actions.”

“I’d also call for local community groups to use their influence to stop this intimidating behaviour, which is becoming a nightly occurrence.”
