A teenager has claimed she stole a sandwich from a local shop because she hadn’t eaten for two days.
Rose Margaret Ward, whose address was given on court papers as Daisyfield Travellers Camp, pleaded guilty to stealing a sandwich worth £2.50 on June 26.
It was revealed to Derry Magistrates Court the 18-year-old is subject to a suspended sentence for a “spree of shoplifting” earlier this year.
Defence solicitor Michael McGee told the court his client had not eaten for two days when she stole the sandwich.
He urged the court not to impose a custodial sentence as the goods were of “low value”.
District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a three month jail term for two years. He also fined the teenager £100 and ordered her to pay £2.50 compensation to the shop.
