A man who damaged a window after he was removed from a city centre bar has received a suspended sentence.

Gary Scott, of Glenside Park, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and disorderly behaviour on November 2, last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 23-year-old was removed from the Ice Wharf by security staff. He leaned up against a window and began throwing his head backwards.

This caused the large window to crack. It cost almost £400 to repair.

A short time later, police were travelling along the Strand Road when Scott walked out in front of their vehicle.

They had to perform an emergency stop and he became aggressive calling the officers ‘scum’.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client was studying for a degree and was a volunteer.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a three month jail sentence for 18 months and ordered Scott to pay compensation.
