A teenage boy aged 13 was left badly shaken after he was reportedly assaulted by a group of males in broad daylight on Sunday in Ballykelly.
The “shocking” incident is reported to have happened around 3.40pm, on the Clooney Road.
“Shortly after 3.40pm it was reported that a 13-year-old male was assaulted by a number of other males,” said a PSNI spokesperson. “The boy received a cut to his lip and swelling and redness to his jaw in the incident. Two males, aged 12, and one aged 15 arrested at the time have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
Tina McCloskey of Ballykelly Community and Youth Association said she was shocked to hear of the alleged assault.
“It’s not on and we just can’t have it,” she said. “I’m shocked to think this could happen in broad daylight. If this happens in the afternoon, what’s not happening after dark?”
Ms McCloskey said she was aware of reports of anti social behaviour in the area, including youths trying to set oil tanks on fire, as well as a report of racial abuse.
“I have been working with the youth workers in the area and last night we started a course aimed at young people, to get them off the streets,” said Ms McCloskey. “I would encourage all young people to give the course a go, but I would also appeal to the parents of youths to know where their children are and what they are doing.”
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything suspicious to contact them at Limavady on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
