A judge has deferred the sentencing of a man who punched a doctor in Gransha Hospital.
Christopher John Mullan, of Inishowen View, Greysteel, pleaded guilty to assault occasioining actual bodily harm on October 12, last year.
The incident occurred when the 19-year-old, who has mental health problems, was a patient in the hospital.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that although a pre-sentence report had been ordered in the case, probation were unable to complete their assessment of him because of his difficulties. Defence solicitor Paddy McDaid told the court Mullan was in a “psychotic moment” when the incident occurred. The teen was “ranting and raving, want to leave the hospital”.
Deferring sentencing, District Judge Barney McElholm said “someone who punched a doctor in a hospital would normally be going to prison. The difficulty in this case is the defendant has serious mental health difficulties.”
Mullan will appear in court again in October.
