A teenager who spat at a police officer after he was searched for drugs has been jailed.

Joseph McCallion, of Glenowen Park, pleaded guilty to assaulting and resisting police on December 1, last year.

He also admitted possessing a class B drug.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police searched the 18-year-old under the misuse of drugs act.

They found two plastic bags contained a white powder.

McCallion admitted he had sniffed the drugs and they had made him ‘hyper’.

He tried to run away from police and had to be retrained. The teenager then spat on a police officer’s shoulder.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr told the court his client had a ‘cocktail of drugs’ in his system on this night.

He said his client, who had breached a suspended sentence, ‘in one way wants to go to prison to see if he can abstain from taking drugs’.

District Judge Barney McElholm jailed the teen for six months.
