A teenager who used a blow torch to break into five different houses has been jailed for a year.
Ryan Harkin, of Northland Road, pleaded guilty to a total of 13 offences including burglary with intent to steal, burglary and theft , and going equipped for theft.
Derry Crown Court heard the 19-year-old had two screwdrivers and a blowtorch which he used to remove glass from windows or doors.
It was revealed that Harkin broke into the home of an 83-year-old man in what the judge called a “spree of criminality.”
Passing sentence Judge Piers Grant said the teen had planned the burglaries, even though he was under the influence of alcohol.
Harkin was also ordered to spend a year on licence following his release from prison.
