Thief banned from Tesco and told to get counselling

A 21-year-old man has been banned from entering Tesco as part of his bail conditions.

Nathan Meehan, of Damien House, Foyle Road, pleaded guilty to stealing vodka and a DVD from the store between November 1 and November 9.

An investigating officer told Derry Magistrates Court she believed she could connect Meehan to the charges.

Opposing a bail application, the officer said that police are concerned about the 21-year-old’s behaviour of late. She told the court Meehan does not have a criminal record, but has been reported to the Public Prosecution Service in relation to other alleged offences.

The officer added police fear he won’t adhere to bail conditions and will commit further offences.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he would give the 21-year-old ‘one final opportunity’ on bail. Meehan was released on his own bail of £500 and banned from entering Tesco. The 21-year-old was also banned from consuming alcohol and ordered to go to his doctor to get a referral for drug and alcohol counselling.

He will appear in court again on December 20.
