Thieves fled after being disturbed by the homeowner whose house they broke into in Derry’s Waterside.
A PSNI spokeswoman said the burglars broke into the house in Grovemount Park, in the Altnagelvin area of the city, in the early hours of the morning on August 14.
But they fled after being disturbed.
“Thieves gained access via a back door at 1.45am but were disturbed when the householder woke up and shouted down to them. They dropped a number of items in the rear garden before making their escape,” the spokeswoman said.
She said this is one of a number of suspicious incidents recently in the area.
Police are reminding householders that preventing burglary starts with securing the home.
They are advising householders to ensure windows as well as doors are locked; to make use of security lighting and alarms; not to leave keys and valuables visible or in an obvious place; and not to keep large amounts of cash at home.
The spokeswoman said neighbours can play an important role by looking out for one another and reporting any suspicious activity to police immediately.
