A man has appeared in court accused of murdering an 18-year-old girl in Bellaghy.

Phelim McNally, of Station Park, Toome, is charged with murdering 18-year-old Lauren O’Neill on Saturday, May 19.

The 26-year-old is also charged with the attempted murder of her sister, 20-year-old Brenda O’Neill.

The charges relate to an alleged incident in the William Court area of Bellaghy.

An investigating officer told Derry Magistrates Court he believed he could connect McNally to the charges.

No bail application was made on behalf of the defendant.

Mc Nally was remanded in custody to appear in court again on Wednesday June 13.

A large number of the victims’ family members were in court and wept throughout the brief hearing.

District Judge Barney McElholm offered his condolences to them as they left the courtroom.
