A major fire at Sheriff’s Mountain last night may have been starting deliberately, it’s emerged.

A call was made to the Fire and Rescue Service at 7:04pm on New Year’s Day, following a report of a large quantity of tyres on fire near Groarty Road.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: “Two appliances from Northland Fire Station were deployed to the scene to a large quantity of tyres burning in a rural area, with no risk to life or property. Early indications would suggest the fire was started deliberately.”

The incident was declared finished shortly after 9pm and it has now been referred through to Derry City Council’s Environmental Health Department.
