Vandals have targeted a County Derry cricket club’s pitch.
Police say the attack at Eglinton Cricket Club happened overnight and that a “substance” was poured over the pitch.
“The covers of the pitch had been pulled apart and a substance poured over the grass causing extensive damage,” a PSNI spokeswoman said.
Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Fleming said that those responsible are depriving the entire community of a first class sporting facility.
“I am deeply disappointed that the pitches at Eglinton Cricket Club have been vandalised as this club has provided a sporting facility for the entire community.
“It is obvious that a lot of hard work goes into maintaining the pitch to the highest standard and as we are in the middle of the cricket season it is even more appalling that people get involved in these type of wanton destruction.
“Eglinton Cricket Club are participating in the North West Senior Final at the weekend and I am sure the community will rally around to ensure that the final goes ahead. I wish them all the best for that final,” he said.
