Vandals who went on a wrecking spree in the Bogside over the weekend have been branded “irresponsible” by a local councillor.
Sinn Féin’s Colly Kelly condemned those who set fire to a number of wheelie bins and pieces of furniture in the Elmwood Road area.
He said: “These are just sheer wanton acts of vandalism against the local community. Be it old furniture, rubbish, or wheelie bins - the impact is the same.
“One thing that I am sure of is that whoever is behind these incidents didn’t burn their own wheelie bins.
“However, they have subjected local residents to the financial burden of having to replace their bins.
“In this day and age, no one can afford to be spending money on this sort of thing which, let’s remember, wasn’t of their making.
“The people who were involved in these incidents need to be held responsible - both in financial terms and in terms of their debt to this community for their actions.”
