A hairdresser and her client were subjected to a vicious assault during a home appointment in Derry yesterday.

Two men have now been arrested in connection with the shocking episode, which occurred at Woodside Heights in The Bolies area of the Waterside, off Old Strabane Road area, and also in connection with an attempted armed robbery at a Donemana business.

It is understood a red car pulled into Woodside Heights shortly after 11am yesterday and a man got out and approached the house.

Sources have told the Journal that the female hairdresser was punched in the face at the front door after a man demanded keys to a car parked outside.

The car is believed to have belonged to the client, who was also attacked and knocked to the floor.

Her car keys and handbag were stolen during the episode, and the culprit made off in her car, abandoning the red vehicle at the scene.

Two men were arrested by police a short time later after the alarm was raised by local people. The area was cordoned off for much of yesterday as forensic officers combed the scene.

One source said that everyone in the area was in total shock over what had happened.

The person said: “This is such a quiet, beautiful area. Everybody is shocked. It’s horrendous, really, really horrendous and very, very disturbing.”

A PSNI spokeswoman last night confirmed said: “Police have arrested two men aged 32 and 37 following an attempted armed robbery at business premises in the Lisnaragh Road area of Donemana and the theft of a vehicle from a house in the Woodside Heights area of Derry/Londonderry this morning, Thursday, 30 April.”

Police have appealed for anyone who may have any information to phone Strand Road on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
