‘Violent thug’ jailed for assault

A ‘violent thug who is a danger to women’ has been jailed for ten months for assaulting his partner.

John Jeffrey Douglas, whose address was given as Benevenagh Drive, Limavady, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an knife and assaulting and resisting police.

The offences were committed on June 4.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police heard shouts of ‘rape, help me’ as they approached an alleyway in Benview Drive.

They saw the injured party lying on the ground, curled up in a defensive position and she was ‘hysterical’.

The court heard the woman was covered in blood and she said she had been stabbed a number of times.

Douglas was arrested and he assaulted a police officer.

The injured party sustained puncture wounds to her neck and a swollen eye, mouth and nose.

It was revealed Douglas has a relevant record and has assaulted other partners.

Jailing the 34-year-old. District Judge Barney McElholm said people who are violent to partners ‘should be identified in some way’.

“In more ancient societies, they would have had their forehead branded. It is not something we would contemplate now but there should be some way of warning the female population and indeed the entire community of violent people.”
