A convicted killer has appeared in court accused of assaulting his girlfriend and dousing both of them in petrol.
Gareth Wray, whose address was given on court papers as Spencer Road, faces two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm between February 20 and March 12.
The 35-year-old received an eight year jail term in 2007 for the manslaughter of 42 year-old Nigel Murphy at his home in Clooney Terrace in April 2005.
An investigating officer told Derry Magistrates Court she believed she could connect Wray to the assault charges.
She added that the alleged injured party is known to be at high risk of domestic violence from the defendant.
She said that a 999 call was made on March 12 and someone was whispering on the line, however the call was terminated before operators were able to find out what was wrong. The call was traced to the alleged injured party.
Police attended her address and she complained of pain to her arm. She was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The alleged injured party later reported to police she ‘remembered getting a beating’ from Wray.
She further alleged she had been assaulted by him two weeks previously and claimed he had doused them both with petrol and threatened to kill them both.
An investigating officer told the court Wray made a counter allegation that he had been assaulted by the woman and sustained black eyes as a result.
Defence solicitor Don Maloney told the court there would be no bail application at this time.
The 35-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on March 27.
