A woman and a teenage boy have appeared in court accused of attempting to hijack two cars in the Waterside at the weekend.

Hannah Kerrigan (24), and 18-year-old Liam McCavana, both of no fixed abode, are jointly charged with attempting to hijack a Vauxhall Vectra and a BMW in the early hours of Saturday, August 24.

Kerrigan is further charged with possessing a knife and a Stanley knife and assaulting police. McCavana faces two further charges of assault on police. The charges relate to an alleged incident in the Trench Road area of the Waterside.

During a brief hearing at Derry Magistrates Court this morning, an investigating officer said he believed he could connect both defendants to the charges.

Ciaran Harkin, defending, said his clients would not be making an application for bail at this time.

Kerrigan and McCavana were remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on September 12.
