A woman who kicked two police officers has been told ‘it is up to her whether she stays out of prison’.

District Judge Barney McElholm made the comment as 24-year-old Bridget Patricia Mongan appeared at the local magistrates court.

Mongan, of Foyle Valley House, pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting police on June 13.

Derry Magistrates Court heard Mongan became ‘agitated’ with police, she threw herself on the ground and officers had to lift her into the police car.

The 24-year-old kicked the officers on the leg and the stomach.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client misuses alcohol on a daily basis and if she doesn’t stop drinking ‘it will kill her’.

He said she has arranged an appointment with the community addiction team and urged the court to adjourn sentencing.

District Judge McElholm said he had heard these promises before but agreed to adjourn sentencing until January 9 to see if Mongan attend the appointment.
