People living in the Culmore area have backed a letter sent by Sinn Fein councillor, Tony Hassan, to the Education Minister, John O’Dowd, calling for the old Thornhill College site to be transformed into a facility for the area’s young people.

Local resident Shaun Maguire said the lack of facilities in the area was no longer acceptable.

“I’d like to back up what Colr. Hassan has been saying. The youth of this area deserve better and the old Thornhill College site would be absolutely perfect,” he said.

Colr. Hassan, who also sent a letter to the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) said Culmore was a forgotten area of Derry and claimed the Catholic Church and a Department for Education had a responsibility to improve facilities for young people in the area.

“The old Thornhill College site is perfect and I’ve written to both the Minister and CCMS to tell them we must act soon.

“The young people of this area deserve better and hopefully we are now moving in the right direction,” he said.
