Derry City Council have announced the appointment of the head of the new marketing team for the City of Culture celebrations.
Fiona Kane, Strategic Communications Advisor with the Strategic Investment Board (SIB), will act as marketing communications lead for the City of Culture, a council spokesperson confirmed.
The move comes following Council chief executive Sharon O’Connor’s decision to move responsibility for marketing the City of Culture from the Culture Company to the Council and the suspension of communications director, Garbhan Downey.
Ms Kane was on the steering group for Derry’s bid to become the first City of Culture in 2013 and also worked with Derry City Council and Ilex to set up the Culture Company, a Council spokesperson explained. She continues to advise the CEO and the Board.
The spokesperson added; “A key aspect of this work is community consultation and participation to ensure the whole city is engaged and will benefit from the legacy of City of Culture.
“It believes that it is imperative that we share our existing resources if we are to successfully move from a planning phase into implementation mode. Key to the success of City of Culture is the decision to integrate the Derry City Council marketing team and Culture Company. Discussions are ongoing with the Culture Company with regard to the resources required.
