A Derry mental health charity has come up with a ‘novel’ way of marking the City of Culture year through art - and needs your old books to craft a unique piece of furniture.
The “What’s Your Story?” City of Culture Project - the brainchild of Action Mental Health (AMH) New Horizons - will take the Derry public’s old books and transform them into a sofa.
Organisers say when completed, the finished artwork will go on display in the city later this year - and then go on tour across the North.
“We started thinking about how we could mark the City of Culture year in a socially inclusive way that would get as many people involved as possible,” Service Manager, Mickie Harkin, told the ‘Journal’ yesterday.
“We hope it will reflect the importance of literature to our city, everyone has old books at home that maybe they read as a child and are now just sitting on a shelf or in a cupboard. We are after as many books as possible. It would be great if through this project we can reflect the influence on our lives that literature has”
Funded through the Lottery’s Culture for All Programme, the project will primarily involve the charity’s service users, but will also be opened up to local schools and to the Derry public.
The notion for using books as the basis for a two seater sofa began to take shape after Mickie happened upon a farmhouse chair fashioned from well read books.
A facilitator will now come on board with the charity to oversee the project.
“We can’t wait to get going now,” Mickie said.
A number of collection points have now been set up around the city - including the ‘Derry Journal’ offices - for the books.
If you wish to donate any old books you can leave them at the ‘Journal’ office, Derry City Council offices, Easons in Foyleside, Disability Action or the ‘Londonderry Sentinel’ office in the Waterside.
