Riding on the success of TV shows such as Glee, Don’t Stop Believing and Last Choir Standing, Derry’s latest show choir is tuning up in time for their first rehearsal on February 24.

Encore Contemporary Choir have just launched their very own website, joined Facebook and set up a Twitter account and now all they need are singers willing to give it their all at a weekly rehearsal.

Committee member Lisa Davidson said that since announcing the choir’s formation last month they have been flooded with interest from singers across the city - proving that there really is music there in the Derry air.

“Derry is known as a being a city from singers and musicians - but you don’t have to be the next Nadine Coyle to join Encore. We want people who can hold a tune, of course, but enthusiasm and dedication count for a lot.”

Musical director for the choir will be teacher Emmett Doherty who is also a member City of Derry Civic Choir, Codetta A former member of the Ulster Youth Choir , Emmett served as Tenor Section leader for the duration of his time there. He has also performed extensively as a soloist with the University of Ulster Choir and Chamber Choir and served as Musical Director in Christ Church for three years.

Emmett said he decided to take on the role of Musical Director for Encore because it “sounded like great craic”.

“Encore is something Derry doesn’t really have at the minute and it will be all the better for it.

“It’s a chance for people from the city and even further afield, to get together and share in something so enjoyable.”

Encore will be pulling together a varied repertoire of songs old and new with a few ‘mash ups’ thrown in.

To kick things off, the choir will be learning a classic pop song as well as a modern hit, with a very Northern Irish feel to it. And the committee are very excited about getting started.

“What we want is for people to come along, have some fun, make some friends and also make some great music. The emphasis will be on having fun and being a great social outlet for adults.”

Encore, which is open to over 21s, will hold their first rehearsal on Thursday, February 24 at 6.50pm in St. Columb’s College. For more info visit www.encore.org.uk, call Lisa on 07542641590 or alternatively visit them on Facebook
