Derry SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack is urging people in the Rosemount area to be extra vigilant following a spate of burglaries in the area.
She said: “At today’s Neighbourhood Safety Meeting, which is held fortnightly, members were made aware of a recent upsurge in house burglaries and vehicle theft.
“Yet again the incidents appear to be the work of opportunists taking advantage of open doors, windows and unlocked vehicles. According to the PSNI, these incidents are being carried out by juveniles looking for access to quick cash or for cars for joyriding.
“Police maintain that early reporting is imperative in order to catch these perpetrators as many are going equipped for crime.”
Colr. Cusack says the importance of security - not only when people are at home but especially when they are not - is key to beating the burglars.
“A five minute trip to the shop can be enough time to be taken advantage of and it seems many of these intruders simply do not care if you are in the house or not,” she said. “Lock your doors, especially PVC, and check your cars. Don’t be a victim of the mental anguish of such an attack.
“I would also like to remind people that, if they have any safety or security issues in the Outerwest area, they can get in contact with me and I will be happy to bring any matter to the NST meeting to be tabled on your behalf.”
